Coming Up, Climbing!

Ready for a new journey?

Hello everyone!

Joel here! It’s been a while since I’ve done a blog post. I’m one of the founders here at Alta, and stoked to be the one bringing you todays amazing news, including a giveaway below.

In two weeks time, your adventures in A Township Tale will be taken to new heights! We’re adding a large tower near the edge of the map, within which you can unlock the ability to climb anywhere in the world.

Climbing!

One of the most exciting aspects of A Township Tale for me, is exploration. Finding new locations, venturing out into the world, and learning the intricacies of the environment. This exploration is primarily “horizontal” however, and we’ve always wanted to break that rule, and take exploration into the 3rd dimension.

This update will introduce climbing to the game, and we’re just getting started! Future updates will continue to leverage and expand upon the climbing feature.

Out of the game, many of the developers here at Alta are big fans of various forms of rock climbing. This passion was definitely a big part of our decision making process as we initially took to developing climbing for A Township Tale. What parts did we want to stay “true to real life”, and which parts did we want to make “gamey”?

An important aspect of climbing that we wanted to maintain was that of technique. A big hurdle for new climbers is not strength, nor endurance, but technique - keep your body closer to the wall, change the way you’re distributing your weight, plan ahead.

The Climbing Tower

It was this decision that lead us towards the idea of a “training” environment for climbing, also an awesome opportunity to further expose the lore behind the game.

Let me know if you’d like a blog post on the lore, I can make that happen!

This training environment is a huge tower, the highlight of this update! Only once you’ve finished the first of its challenges will you be able to climb elsewhere in the world.

The tower is split into multiple stages of difficulty. The first will unlock climbing, while further stages will increase your stamina, which in turn allows you to climb further between rests.

Here’s some concept art of the second area!

Over the coming weeks

I’ve got a lot of plans for the coming week, as we gear up for launch. We’ve got more information, screenshots, and concept art on its way.

Many people have expressed wanting to see some more spoilers in the supporter chat. If that includes you, check it out, I’ve been dropping tower spoilers there for a couple weeks now, and there’s more to come!

We’re also running a giveaway over on Twitter. CHECK IT OUT

Next up

Keep an eye out, the next post is dropping in a couple days, I’m gathering up some screenshots of the tower. Let me know if there’s anything about it in particular you’d like to know!
