One of my personal favorite real life experiences is to go caving. Growing up, exploring caves in the jungle was so much fun. We’d go in with a torchlight, and look at the stalactites, the dips and crevasses in every cavern. We’d have to watch our footing, sometimes we’d need to crawl through openings and taking my face out of bat dropping-infested water, I’d be psyched to see where this path took us.

With caverns in A Township Tale, we want to give in to the fantasy aspect of the game. Where you can encounter strange, long forgotten fauna and flora. Where there may be strange plants growing off the sediment in the rocks, pools of unknown organic material and minerals that create unique shapes in the stone. There are many themes we can explore, and here we see an early glimpse of one of them.

Going deeper in the caves you’ll come across a much darker themed cave system. The walls are lined with growths, pale plants grow between cracks that have unique properties for various recipes. You’ll be avoiding the sputter of toxic goo pits, and need to be wary of everything you see. There’s an ecosystem at work here that can't be found anywhere else. Like exploring an alien planet, the caves this deep emanate a strange hue of light. If you could breathe the air, you’d feel conscious about the specks floating in front of you.

The Dark Caves are just one of the many locations in the game where you put yourself in danger to find unique crafting items, look for specific enemy drops, and seek out the boss of the region to claim legendary loot.

Each new area of the game opens up a new plethora of themed weapons, armour, recipes, to change your playstyle and possibilities in the Overworld. If you’ve spent weeks down in these caves, and you come out, we want you to have all the evidence that you’ve been living there a while.
